The term industrial hemp dates back to the 1960's and typically refers to cannabis varieties that are grown primarily as an agricultural crop. It's statutory definition is that of any variety of the Cannabis sativa L. plant that has a concentration of no more than 0.3% THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) on a dry weight basis. In general, industrial hemp tends to have a high concentration of CBD (cannabidiol), which is a non-psychoactive compound, and a very low concentration of THC, which is the psychoactive compound found in much larger concentrations in marijuana plants that gives a person the feeling of being “high”.
CBD (cannabidiol) is a natural occurring compound found within the hemp plant (Cannabis sativa L.). It is one of more than one hundred phytocannabinoids found within the plant and has been studied quite extensively for its therapeutic benefits.
No. CBD is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid found in the hemp plant and will not give you the feeling of being “high”. Even the full spectrum CBD that has up to 0.3% THC will not have any psychoactive effect on a person.
There has been extensive scientific research done on CBD with many new and exciting discoveries still being made all the time. So far, many therapeutic applications have been found for the use of CBD with the most common ones being anxiety/depression, pain/inflammation, and sleep. Other known applications include (but are not limited to): autoimmune disorders (rheumatoid arthritis), neurological conditions (epilepsy, Alzheimer's, multiple sclerosis, stroke), metabolic syndrome (diabetes), neuropsychiatric illnesses (autism, ADHD, PTSD, schizophrenia, alcoholism/drug addictions), gut disorders (colitis, Crohn's), cardiovascular issues (atherosclerosis, arrhythmia, high blood pressure), and skin disease (acne, dermatitis, psoriasis).
The endocannabinoid system (ECS), first discovered around the early 90's, is a biological system found within any vertebrate (humans, cats, dogs, etc.). Although there is still much to learn about the ECS, it is believed to help create homeostasis (equilibrium) within the body by regulating a variety of functions such as sleep, mood, memory, appetite, inflammation, motor control, temperature regulation, digestion, reproduction/fertility, and pain sensation.
Because everybody is different and everyone has different needs, there is no exact amount that is perfect for everyone. One common generic recommendation is that a person should take around 1mg of CBD per 10 pounds of weight (e.g. 180lb person = 18mg of CBD). A good rule to follow if you are taking CBD for the first time is to start out with a low amount to test its effectiveness and slowly work your way up to the amount that works best for you. Some people like to keep a journal at first to document how much was taken, at what time(s), and the effect it had (or didn't have). Also note that CBD can be taken in smaller amounts multiple times a day, but no matter which method is chosen, an important thing to remember is that consistency is key. CBD will be more effective when taken on a regular basis.
Although adverse side effects are uncommon, some people have reported dry mouth, low blood pressure, light headedness, and drowsiness.
All vertebrates have an endocannabinoid system and can therefore benefit from CBD. So, as long as your pet is a vertebrate (cats, dogs, etc.), they can take CBD. The most common reasons people give their pets CBD is for anxiety and/or joint pain, but it may be used for other issues as well (skin disorders, seizure disorders, etc). The most common recommendation for the amount to give to a pet is around 1mg of CBD for 10lbs of weight (e.g. 30lb dog = 3mg of CBD) but, just like humans, all animals are different and adjustments to the amount given may be necessary.
CBD isolate a product where the company has isolated the CBD molecule completely from the rest of the hemp plant; therefore, there are no other cannabinoids (CBG, CBC, THC, etc.) or terpenes (linalool, pinene, etc.) found within the product. It is strictly CBD only.
Broad spectrum CBD products are made using all components of the hemp plant, but the THC has been removed. These products are preferred for those who have to take drug tests because it shouldn't test positive for THC. It is believed that utilizing as many components of the hemp plant as possible in a product makes it more effective so, although the THC has been removed, you are still getting a good spectrum of other cannabinoids and terpenes.
Full spectrum CBD products are made using all components of the hemp plant. This means that there will be other cannabinoids (e.g. CBG, CBC) and terpenes (e.g. limonene, pinene) included in the product as well as the legal amount of up to 0.3% THC. Many people believe that having as much of the plant as possible in CBD products makes the product more effective because there is a synergistic relationship that goes on between all of the naturally occurring components of the plant; thus, creating what is known as the “Entourage Effect”.
Terpenes are the natural compounds found in the hemp flower or bud of the plant that are responsible for giving each particular strain its unique scent and taste. Terpenes are very similar to essential oils, although truly it is the essential oils that are primarily made of terpenes.
